Phantoms Fall to Capitols 3-2

Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - A series of games that has been wrought with tight games and heartbreaks for the Youngstown Phantoms (19-16-5-3, 46 points) added another chapter tonight as the Phantoms erased a two-goal deficit to tie the game, only to see the Madison Capitols snatch another close one, 3-2 Friday night at the Covelli Centre. The Phantoms fell to 2-4-2-0 against Madison this year while the Capitols improved to 6-2-0-0 against Youngstown.

It was a goal in the middle stages of the third period that lifted Madison to the win. Casey Severo won a puck battle in the left corner of the Youngstown zone and carried the puck towards the cage. When Kyle Chauvette (23 saves) went for the poke check, Severo slipped the puck through Chauvette's five hole and into the cage for his 11th of the season and a 3-2 Madison lead.

Youngstown entered the third period trailing 2-0, but two goals in the first five minutes of the period equalized the game. 97 seconds into the period Justin Varner floated a shot on net from the right point that Simon Latkoczy (24 saves) tried to cover up, but Tiernan Shoudy crashed the cage for the Phantoms and poked it past the Madison netminder to get Youngstown on the board. It was Shoudy's first goal as a Phantom after being acquired ten days ago from Des Moines. Two-and-a-half minutes later Winter Wallace tipped home Jaden Grant's pass for his 13th goal of the season, tying the game.

Madison scored the only goals of the first two periods, once in each frame to build their 2-0 advantage. Quinn Finley ripped a wrister past Chauvette 4:16 into the game for his eighth of the season and a 1-0 Capitols lead. The visitors doubled their advantage on a pretty passing play at the 16:19 mark of the second that ended with Reid Pabich scoring his 13th goal of the season.

"Madison plays with an identity and they're good at what they do," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "We made them play to their identity in the first period, and didn't make them veer from it. That was the issue I had. Through the first 20 minutes I felt like they were able to skate through us. We weren't able to finish a lot of hits. We poked and hoped, and at the end of the day when you do that against skilled teams, you're going to pay for it."

The win for Madison gave them a four-point cushion on Youngstown in the standings, but the Phantoms still have four games in hand on the Capitols as they battle for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference. The two teams wrap up their season series tomorrow at the Covelli Centre at 7:05pm.
