Fighting Saints Open Weekend with Win over NTDP

Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - While Team USA made an effort to erase what was a game-spanning lead for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, it was the Saints who battled back to get the win. Mikey Burchill re-tied the game halfway through the third period, and Jackson Hallum scored the game-winning goal with four minutes remaining in regulation to give the Saints a 4-3 win over the Under-17s on Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.

Michael Feenstra's shot attempt from the left-wing boards got caught up in the thick of traffic, but Hallum was the first to jump on the loose puck and wire it in between the pads of USA goaltender Michael Chambre. It was his second goal and fourth point since joining the Fighting Saints. That capped off the rally from the Fighting Saints, who had to stave off a Team USA surge.

Goals within 24 seconds gave the NTDP life. Teddy Townsend, who made his debut with USA, scored his first USHL goal at the 3:35 mark, and Oliver Moore capped off a tic-tac-toe passing play at 3:59 to go from 2-1 down to 3-2 ahead. It was the first and only time that the NTDP led in the game.

Mikey Burchill tied the game four and a half minutes later, as the line of Burchill, Max Montes and Davis Burnside would not be denied in a third period shift. Montes cut off a pass in center and gave Burnside the edge down the middle of the ice. Burnside fanned the puck out to Burchill, who unleashed a shot from the right wing and beat Chambre to the blocker side to tie the game at three.

Dubuque scored the only goal of the first period. Austin Oravetz filtered a shot from the point that was tipped down immediately by Hallum. Chambre kicked out the rebound, and Kenny Connors bashed the puck in from the front of the net to get Dubuque off and running. It was the Saints' 20th win of the season when scoring the opening goal.

The 17s got off to the best start possible in the second period. A turnover from deep in the Saints' defensive zone proved costly. A bad bounce put a puck right down the middle of the ice, and Will Vote skated onto it and snapped a shot past Dubuque goaltender Paxton Geisel to tie the game at one.

It took until the latter part of the second period for the Fighting Saints to re-take the lead. Max Burkholder's speed backed off the USA defense, and on a give-and-go with Connor Kurth, swept the puck to the front of the goal. Stephen Halliday couldn't get good wood on the initial attempt, but stuck with it on the backhand to hoist the puck into the net to get the Saints up 2-1 heading into the third.

Geisel made 21 saves on the night to earn his 19th win of the season. That now puts him in second place in wins by a goaltender in the USHL. It was his second win in a row dating back to last Sunday against the Youngstown Phantoms.

The victory marked Dubuque's third win in a row.

The Fighting Saints continue the three-in-three with the second of three games against the NTDP on Saturday, March 5 at 6:05 p.m. central. Catch all the action on FSBN (bit.ly/fsbnhockey) or on HockeyTV.
