Hawks Suffer Another Setback in Lincoln

March 4, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

For the second time at the Ice Box this season, a big third period for the Lincoln Stars dashed the Waterloo Black Hawks' hopes for a road win; the Stars pulled away to defeat the Hawks 8-4 Friday.

On January 21st, Lincoln had scored five times in the final 20 minutes to whisk away a 5-4 decision. In the rematch, it was six for the home team in the final frame. The game had been tied 2-2 at the second intermission, and at one point, Waterloo had led 2-0.

Lincoln's first lead came at 3:03 of the third when Lucas Wahlin put a shot from the right circle under the crossbar. Connor Brown answered for the Hawks, scoring on a rebound during a power play at 4:21.

The tie lasted for just 37 seconds.

Aiden Thompson put Lincoln back in front at 4:58, on his way to a five-point night. Within four minutes, the Stars' lead would balloon to three goals after scores by Killian Kiecker-Olson and Doug Grimes.

Owen Baker temporarily staunched the run, finding the net from below the right faceoff dot with 8:15 remaining.

However, a power play goal by Dalton Norris at 15:57 and Griffin Jurecki's late empty net score put the matchup definitively out of reach.

Waterloo had struck for two goals separated by 52 seconds in the early minutes of the first period. Patrick Geary was only a couple of feet inside the blue line at the left point when the puck came to him at 2:02; he put the Hawks' first shot of the night into the net from distance. Then at 2:54, James Hong capitalized on a turnover, squeezing a shot between Kaidan Mbereko and the post to his right.

Lincoln drew back within one goal at 5:10; three Stars touched the puck in quick succession on a rush, with Luke Johnson deflecting in a feed from just outside the crease.

Then the Stars evened up the game with the only goal of the second period. It came on a power play one-timer from the left circle by Thompson at 17:35. Thompson would go on to assist on three of Lincoln's six third period tallies.

Now the Hawks travel back from Nebraska by way of Des Moines, where they meet the Buccaneers on Saturday night in Buccaneer Arena at 6:05 p.m.
