Phantoms Cruise Past USA for Sixth Straight Victory
April 8, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms left no doubt in their final road game of the season, routing the Team USA U17s by a final score of 12-0. Youngstown goaltender Ryan Bednard earned his second shutout of the season, turning aside all 38 USA shot attempts.
Luke McInnis opened up the scoring just over three minutes into the contest, when his off-angle shot snuck past USA netminder Dylan St. Cyr for McInnis' 6th goal of the year.
The Phantoms would open up a three goal advantage behind a pair of quick tallies by Yushiroh Hirano. After a nice setup from Cam Morrison, Hirano blew a wrist shot past St. Cyr for his 21st mark of the season. Hirano would add his 22nd less than two minutes later, when his slap-shot beat St. Cyr short side.
Youngstown would continue to roll, adding another trio of goals in the second frame. Phantoms defenseman Connor Moore's wrist shot pushed the Youngstown lead to four and chased St. Cyr from the contest, as he was replaced by Adam Scheel.
Cam Morrison would extend his USHL rookie scoring lead by adding an unassisted goal that found its way past Scheel for Morrison's 31st bingo this year.
Phantoms Captain Matt Alvaro would increase the lead before the intermission, slamming home a nifty feed from Chase Pearson right outside the crease. Youngstown led 6-0 after 40 minutes.
The flood gates would continue to open, as the Phantoms went on to add six goals in the final period to win by a dozen. Yushiroh Hirano would end up with four goals on the evening, earning the Phantoms first hat-trick of the season.
It was a memorable night for Phantoms defenseman Alec Mahalak, who registered three assists in his first ever USHL game and was a +6 on the night.
The Phantoms and USA will meet again Saturday night in Youngstown. It will be the Phantoms final home game of the 2015-16 season, and will be Fan Appreciation Night. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
