GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Samuel Bucek tallied two goals and Haralds Egle added three assists as the Chicago Steel (25-26-4-3, 57 points) started the final weekend of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks (27-25-3-4, 61 points) Friday at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Chicago's winning streak now sits at three games for a second time this season.
Steel defenseman Billy Sweezey opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game, beating Muskegon netminder Joey Daccord on the blocker side for his third goal of the year. Chicago improved its lead to 2-0 later in the period with a power play goal from Bucek. Egle patiently waited with the puck on the left wing, then slid a pass to the back door where Bucek knocked a one-timer home. The Steel outshot Muskegon 11-8 in the frame.
Chicago improved its lead to 3-0 midway through the second period off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play. The Steel entered the zone on a three-on-one rush led by Jake Nielsen on the right wing. Nielsen connected on a give-and-go with Marc Johnstone, then crossed a quick pass to Matt Kiersted at the far post. Kiersted's shot was denied by Daccord, but Johnstone followed up at the top of the crease, jamming a rebound over Daccord's glove at 9:42.
Muskegon got on the board later in the period when Tyler Irvine tipped in a point shot from Nate Kallen for a power play goal at 14:56. It was the first unsuccessful penalty kill for the Steel in its last four games.
Chicago added two goals in the third period. Max Zimmer poked Jake Jaremko's rebound home at 15:19. Samuel Bucek then tallied his second goal of the game on a beautiful backhanded breakaway less than one minute later, securing a 5-1 victory for the Steel.
Chicago finished the six-game season series against Muskegon with a 4-1-1-0 record. Bucek will miss the final two games of the season as he now joins Team Slovakia for the IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D.
The final weekend of the season continues Saturday when the Steel visit the Bloomington Thunder at 7:00 p.m. Chicago then returns home on Sunday, April 10 to host the Madison Capitols on Fan Appreciation Day. Faceoff for the season finale is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to walk away with tons of giveaway items, including t-shirts, pennants, posters and more.
