Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Jake Petricka allowed one run in seven innings and Nick Ciolli blasted a late three-run homer to power the Dash past the Keys 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and helped Winston-Salem avoid the sweep.
The Keys (30-19, 71-47) scored first for the fourth straight game, notching a run against Petricka in the second inning. Kipp Schutz led off with a double, moved to third base on a groundout, and scored on Mike Flacco's RBI double down the left field line to make it 1-0 Frederick.
Winston-Salem (27-21, 59-59) grabbed its first lead of the series in the fourth with Nick Haughian on the mound for the Keys. The Dash loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, a single, and an error before a wild pitch brought Ian Gac home from third to tie the game. On Haughian's next pitch, Mike Blanke brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Leading 2-1, the Dash were supported by Petricka (3-6), who threw seven good innings, scattering five hits and one run. Winston caught a break in the sixth inning when Jonathan Schoop hit what appeared to be a game-tying solo home run off the second tier of signage in left field. Home plate umpire Aaron Roberts, however, mistakenly ruled that the ball glanced off the first tier of signage and came back into play, making the ball live and giving Schoop a double instead of a homer. Keys manager Orlando Gomez argued to no avail and Petricka got out of the inning without allowing a run when Miguel Abreu grounded out to third base.
Ciolli provided some needed insurance in the eighth inning with Ryan O'Shea pitching in relief. O'Shea hit Gac and walked Brady Shoemaker before Ciolli hit an opposite field home run off the second tier of signs in left field. Fans jeered the umpiring crew for awarding Ciolli a three-run home run despite the ball bouncing off the same level of signs as the ball Schoop hit two innings earlier. The homer gave the Dash a 5-1 lead.
The insurance proved necessary, as Steve Bumbry hit a solo home run off Ryan Kussmaul in the bottom of the inning to account for the final score.
Petricka earned the win, his third in nine Carolina League starts, while lowering his ERA to 4.04. Haughian (8-6) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run; he surrendered two unearned runs on four hits over six innings.
The win allows the Dash to keep at least a share of first place in the Southern Division, as Winston-Salem entered the day tied with Kinston for the top spot.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Monday to begin a series with the Lynchburg Hillcats. At 6 p.m., the teams will finish a game started on June 28. The scoreless game will start in the bottom of the first inning. When the nine-inning game concludes, the teams will play a seven-inning contest immediately afterward. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com.
