Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Promoted to the Pelicans today from Class A Hickory, first baseman Andrew Clark announced his arrival in the Carolina League in a big way, snapping a 1-1 tie in the fourth with a rocket home run out to right and helping to lead Myrtle Beach to a split of both the four-game weekend and 20-game season series with the Potomac Nationals by way of a 5-2 Sunday afternoon win at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium.

Potomac's right-handed starter Cameron Selik looked dominant through the first three and two-thirds, retiring the first 11 men he faced in a row before the Pelicans finally broke through. Travis Adair worked a two-out walk to open the flood gates as the first man on, and Myrtle Beach busted out behind him. Vinny DiFazio doubled Adair in to erase Potomac's early 1-0 lead and was aboard in scoring position for Clark. The University of Louisville product, who batted .313 in his 103 games in the South Atlantic League, belted a Selik offering over the right-field wall to drive home a pair, break the tie, and send the Birds on the road to the win.

Myrtle Beach added a run on a Ryan Strausborger triple and Jared Hoying double following the homer to extend their lead to 4-1 and chase Selik (4-9). The Pelicans' four straight extra-base hits matched their combined total from the previous two nights, both Myrtle Beach losses.

The offensive turnaround bookended the four-game series with Pelicans victories and made a winner out of right-hander Justin Grimm whose six innings of four-hit, one-run ball stifled the Nationals enough. Grimm (4-2) struck out four and walked two, throwing 53 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

Clark sparked a Pelicans' insurance run in the sixth when he singled with two outs, went to second base on Ryan Strausborger's subsequent base hit, and scored one batter later on Jared Hoying's knock to make it 5-1.

Kasey Kiker, Ryan Kelly, and Ryan Rodebaugh each worked an inning behind Grimm to close out the victory. Rodebaugh (S, 2) allowed one hit in the ninth, Eury Perez's two-out single, but picked off the lone baserunner of the ninth to polish off the victory.

Myrtle Beach hits the road to wrap up the second-to-last road trip of the season with a three-game slate at Salem scheduled to open Monday night at 7:05 at Salem Memorial Ballpark. The Pelicans will send lefty Chad Bell (2-1, 2.75) to oppose the Red Sox' righty Ryan Pressly (6-9, 4.30).

Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
