SALEM, VA (August 14, 2011)- The Salem Red Sox (22-27, 53-65) defeated the Kinston Indians (26-22, 64-52) by a score of 10-3. The Red Sox used a four run bottom of the sixth inning that put the game out of reach. Miles Head had a big RBI base hit in the sixth for the Red Sox and Shannon Wilkerson also got an RBI single, which gave Salem all the momentum going into the seventh inning.
The Salem Red Sox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning off Kinston starting pitcher T.J. House. Derrik Gibson waked to start the game, and then Heiker Meneses tripled home Gibson and it was 1-0. Jorge Padron hit a grounder to first baseman Jesus Aguilar, but that scored Meneses from third base making it a 2-0 ballgame.
In the bottom half of the second inning Salem added one more run. With two outs Josue Peley walked and then David Mailman doubled him home. The score was 3-0 after two complete innings
It remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. The K-Tribe brought in Trey Haley from the bullpen. Haley walked the bases loaded with no outs. Padron hit a ground ball to shortstop Tyler Cannon, and Cannon could only make one out at second base, a run came into score and their was still runners on the corners Miles Head then got a base hit that scored both runners as a fielding error allowed the second run to score all the way from first base and allowed Head to get into second base. That was the third run that came into score making it a 6-0 game and then Shannon Wilkerson singled home Head to make the score 7-0 after six complete innings of play.
Tom Ebert entered the game in the top of the seventh for Salem. Jordan Casas for Kinston greeted him with a sharp base hit to center field. Adam Abraham was hit by the pitch and then Jeremie Tice singled to load the bases. Casey Frawley singled home two runs making the score 7-2 Salem.
Salem added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Peley singled to center and advanced to second on a fly ball. Derrik Gibson singled him home and that made the score 8-2 after seven full innings in Salem.
In the home half of the eighth inning Salem tacked on two runs. Brice Brentz singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Shannon Wilkerson reached on an error, setting up Alex Valdez. Valdez promptly lined a base hit to left field scoring Brentz and advancing Wilkerson to third base. Peley then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field which chased home Wilkerson from third Making the score 10-2.
Casey Frawley homered in the ninth-inning; it was his eleventh of the season. That closed the scoring, as the final was 10-3.
The winning pitcher was Stolmy Pimentel who improved his record to (3-3). T.J. Hose was given the loss and he sees his record fall to (6-11).
Kinston will return home for a quick three game set against the Potomac Nationals. All three games Monday-Wednesday will start at 6:30pm. No Pitching Match-up has been announced at this point.
