Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads welcomed the Peterborough Petes to the Hershey Centre for a rare Tuesday night tilt. The two met back on October 1st in Peterborough where the Steelheads won their first road game of the season over the Petes 6-1. Both Michael McLeod and Alexander Nylander recorded a goal and two assists while Josh Burnside a goal and an assist of his own. Both teams came into tonight's game hoping to reverse their fortunes as they have dropped their last three games.
Peterborough would grab the early 1-0 lead just 4 minutes into the game, as Logan DeNoble put one by Jack Flinn for his fourth goal of the season. Just 26 seconds after DeNoble, the Petes would strike again as Adam Timleck received a Josh Coyle pass at the face off dot and made no mistake firing it by the glove of Flinn for his 11th of the season. The Petes controlled the play for the majority of the first period, limiting the number of quality scoring chances for the Steelheads. The best chance the Steelheads had was on the penalty kill as Nathan Bastian found himself behind the defence and in alone on Petes' goalie, Matthew Marcina. Bastian faked going to his backhand and went to his forehand but was denied by the sprawling left pad of Marcina to keep the Trout off the scoreboard. That would pay dividend later as the Petes went up 3-0 as Hunter Garlent fired one past Flinn for his 17th goal of the year as the Petes held a three goal lead going into the second. Shots in the frame were 17-7 Petes.
The Steelheads looked to climb their way back into the game after a shaky first period. They would cut the Petes' lead to 3-1 as Nicolas Hague received a Ryan McLeod pass at the top of the circle and snapped a wrist shot blocker side on Marcina. The goal was Hague's second of the season as Daniel Muzito-Bagenda picked up the other assist on the tally. However, the Petes would regain their three goal lead minutes after Hague, as Mississauga native, Nick Grima would launch a wrist shot that found its way through a crowd for his first career OHL goal. The Petes would continue their attack as 57 seconds after Grima, Hunter Garlent would clean up a Matt Spencer rebound in front of Flinn to make it 5-1 Peterborough heading into the third. Shots in the frame were 13-8 Petes, 30-15 Petes total.
Mississauga's mission for the final frame was to do the near impossible as they looked to come back from a four goal deficit. The period saw both teams go back and fourth with the scoring chances. In particular, Nathan Bastian had an abundance of scoring chances help to kick-start the comeback, but to no prevail as Marcina stopped everything that came his way in the period to give the Petes the 5-1 victory. With the win, Peterborough now sits one point back of the Steelheads for third place in the Eastern Conference.
The Steelheads will make their way to North Bay for the second time in two weeks as they look to exact revenge after a 2-1 OT loss on December 17th. Following Thursday's game, the Trout will make their to Owen Sound to face off against the Attack before they return home for a Sunday afternoon game against the Ottawa 67s.
