Petes Best Gens in Hard Fought Friday Night Battle

OSHAWA, ON - The Generals face off against the Petes in a rivalry matchup. It is always a playoff atmosphere when the Petes come to town, this was sure to be a spirited bout. The Petes had a 7-2-0-1 in their last ten games and your Generals had a 3-6-0-1 record. These rival teams have met only once this season, and the Petes bested the Generals 2-1 in regulation.

The Wawanesa Toy Drive in support of the United Way Durham Region was held during tonight's game.

1st Period:

The scoreboard didn't stay blank for long. Petes defender Declan Chisholm floated a wrist shot through a screen of bodies. The shot that was perfectly placed. It went through at least four players and beat Paputsakis on his glove side.

The period was one of run-and-gun, guerilla style offensives. The action was incredibly fast paced with continuous North-South movement.

Daniel Walker threw a big hit on Petes' rookie Mason McTavish and Petes' Jacob Paquette answered the bell instigating a fight with Walker. Walker did as Walker does and won the fight. Paquette was ejected from the game. Several Generals players retrieved Walker's equipment and brought it to the sin-bin where they gave him taps of appreciation and congratulations.

The game got even more rough and tumble early after the fight. Serron Noel looked his size clearly putting in an effort to finish his checks. William Ennis was a rock making up for lost physicality from the Generals' blueline with Nico Gross being away at the Swiss World Junior camp.

The Generals would be the next on the board. Ty Tullio carried the puck into the Generals zone on a break in. He passed over to Neumann, who passed from west to east to captain Kyle MacLean. MacLean turned the play into a give-and-go with a return pass to Neumann who converted on the play with a shot that beat Jones. Bringing the game even at ones.

While the last goal was being announced, Mason McTavish received a pass from Matt McNamara and went off to the races. He snuck past the Generals' defenders and it was just McTavish on a breakaway against Paputsakis. McTavish beat Paputsakis with a wrist shot to the blocker side. The recently tied game was returned to a Petes' advantage.

A Generals' powerplay was converted on the scoreboard. Ty Tullio grabbed the puck on the left side of the ice and carried held the puck without any Petes pressure for what felt like an eternity as he patiently bided his time looking for a solid scoring opportunity. His patience was rewarded as he launched a shot-pass to Serron Noel who was just outside the crease who deflected the puck past Hunter Jones

For those who thought one Daniel Walker fight was exciting enough for a game, they couldn't possibly think we'd see two - in one period nonetheless. The one player in this game bigger than 6-foot-5 Walker was 6-foot-7 John Parker-Jones, and clearly Parker-Jones wasn't satisfied with watching Walker win the fight against Paquette and thought he could do better. Parker-Jones threw his gloves and then started throwing fists. Both players got their licks in, but ultimately the refs were able to step in and the fight was branded a draw. Both players were ejected from the game.

The period would end even in goals at 2-2 and even in shots at 11-11.

2nd Period:

The intensity of the first period carried into the second. The hits were flying and the line between rock 'em sock 'em hockey and penalized offenses was towed. Although each team got their powerplays, the balance of power stayed even at two per side.

Giovanni Vallati in particular stood out on defense, blocking shots and making smart plays. Generals' 'tender Paputsakis was solid throughout the mid-period making the big stops to keep the game even until late in the period.

Generals' alternate captain Mitch Brewer also had a strong period, drawing two penalties and generating some offense.

With just under four minutes remaining, a Petes shot banked off the back boards behind the Generals' net. It was picked up by Mason McTavish who slipped his second of the game past Paputsakis.

What was even in the first, was offset by one on each key stat. The Petes lead in goals 3-2 and your Generals in shots with 25-24.

3rd Period:

The third period started with a Generals powerplay and the Generals sustained strong offensive pressure. Noel kept up his physical presence throwing his 6-foot-6 frame around. Noel looked really strong in tandem with longtime linemate Allan McShane throughout the game, and especially on the powerplay.

The Generals had several powerplays throughout the period. Their top unit of Neumann, Tullio, McShane, Noel and Vallati looked great. They sustained pressure, controlled the puck well and got their chances. They weren't able to convert early in the period, but they took control of the game for the Generals.

A late Generals powerplay gave the team hope. Although the boys in white, red, and blue lived in the Petes zone throughout the third it wasn't enough to tie the game and the Petes advantage from the second would be enough to hold off the Generals.
