Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Saginaw Spirit rolled into town Thursday evening for a matchup with the Spitfires. This was the fourth meeting of the season. Windsor had a 2-0-1-0 record versus the Spirit coming into tonight's contest. Saginaw was 1-2-0-0.
In the first period, it took 16 and a half minutes before the floodgates opened. Afanasyev started the scoring burying a rebound from Johnston to put the Spits up 1-0. Only 2 minutes later, the Spirit struck back and tied the game at 1. However, 12 seconds after tying the game, Saginaw netminder gave the puck away behind the net to Cuylle, who fired a pass out front to a wide open Angle who put it in the open net restoring the one-goal lead. Only 17 seconds after that, the Spirit tied it back up at 2. Shots were tied at 12 after one period of play.
In the 2nd frame, the Spirit took their first lead of the game just 6 minutes in. Nevertheless, the Spitfires responded quickly just over a minute later. Afanasyev shot it off a won draw by Johnston tying the game at 3. It was Afanasyev's 2nd goal of the night and Johnston 2nd assist. Shots were in favour of Windsor after 2, 21-15.
In the third frame, the Spirit appear to score, but the net was clearly dislodged. No team was able to break the deadlock so we were off to overtime.
In the overtime, teams traded chances back and forth with no stoppages for 4 minutes. In the dire seconds, the Spits took a penalty that resulted in a penalty shot. The Spirit scored on the penalty shot in overtime to win the game, 4-3.
These teams will face off four more times this season.
The Spitfires' next game is Friday, December 13th when they travel to Guelph to take on the Storm. The Spitfires' next home game is Sunday, December 15th, when the London Knights come to town. Remember to bring your teddy bears for the teddy bear toss!
