Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA-- Matt Peterson tossed seven shutout innings in turning in his best performance of the season as the Altoona Curve opened their season-long eight-game homestand with a 4-1 win over the Norwich Navigators Monday night at Blair County Ballpark.
The Curve (21-19) won for the 12th time in their last 15 home games, while Norwich dropped to 18-24 on the season.
Peterson (4-3), who entered the game with an Eastern League-worst 8.47 ERA and the third-most walks in
the circuit over his first eight appearances, did not walk a batter and surrendered just four hits in picking up his fourth win of the season. The right-hander also improved to 4-0 in four starts at Blair County Ballpark.
Peterson left the game after seven innings with a 2-0 lead on the strength of a third-inning, two-run homer by Tom Evans. Norwich scored a run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Hansel Izquierdo, and threatened to even the game, but closer Justin Kaye stranded two Navigators runners on base to preserve the lead.
Altoona extended its advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded two-run single off the bat of Carlos Maldonado. Maldonado also doubled in the second inning and joined Evans and Jose Bautista with two of the Curve's seven hits in the win.
In the top of the ninth, Kaye gave up a one-out single, but retired the final two Norwich hitters to close out the game and notch his eighth save of the season.
Norwich starter Chris Begg (3-3) pitched well, allowing just two runs on four hits in seven innings, but was saddled with the loss. Begg, who pitched three seasons of independent baseball before being signed with the Giants in 2003, struck out seven Curve hitters.
The Curve and Navigators will continue their four-game set Tuesday night at 6:35 PM as left-hander Paul Maholm (1-1, 4.43) will make his second start since coming off the Disabled List with a groin injury against Norwich righty James Garcia (2-4, 4.94). Gates at Blair County Ballpark will open to the public at 5:30 PM.
