Chesapeake Baysox News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - A sloppy third inning led to four New Hampshire runs, erasing an early Baysox lead while setting up the Fisher Cats for a 5-3 win on a wet Monday evening.
The loss ends Bowie's five-game winning streak.
The game started on a positive note for the Baysox (22-21), as Tripper Johnson hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his third blast of the season.
Hayden Penn protected Bowie's lead for two innings but he labored to do so. Penn stranded a pair of runners in each of the first two innings, but the Fisher Cats broke through in their third crack at the Baysox pitcher.
New Hampshire opened the bottom of the third with three soft hits - an infield single, a double that rightfielder Woody Cliffords lost in the New England sky, and a second infield single. That produced one run, and Penn now faced runners on first and second with nobody out. Catcher Brandon Marsters attempted to pickoff Maikel Jova at first, but his throw sailed past the bag and moved each runner up a base. Justin Singleton grounded out to first, scoring another run to tie the game, 2-2.
A fielding error by Brandon Fahey brought home another run and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Vito Chiaravalloti plated the fourth run of the frame.
Only three of the runs were charged to Penn (3-3), but he was saddled with the loss after allowing seven hits and three walks in just five innings.
The Baysox closed to within one in the seventh, but may have missed an opportunity for more. Mike Huggins led off the inning with a double to left, and a single by Cory Keylor put runners at the corners. But Marsters followed by grounded into a double play that scored Huggins from third, but it came at the expense of two outs. Reimers (4-3) then got Fahey to ground out to end the inning.
Kevin Barker made it 5-3 in favor of the Fisher Cats with a towering homer off Melqui Torres to start the bottom of the seventh. The blast cleared an access road beyond the rightfield fence.
BAYSOX NOTES: The start of the game was pushed back 61 minutes due to rain. It marked the third straight day that the Baysox have either been delayed or postponed by inclement weather...Altoona won its game against Norwich tonight on a 4-1 decision. The Curve leapfrogged the Baysox into third place in the Southern Division.
ON DECK: LHP Brian Forystek (1-1, 3.73) will look to start a new winning streak for the Baysox Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Fisher Cats Stadium. The Baysox offense will have its hands full with RHP Shaun Marcum (6-1, 2.42) on the mound for the Fisher Cats.
