New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Metairie, LA ¬" New Orleans Zephyrs outfielder Bryan Petersen and relief pitcher Victor Garate were named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, the league announced Wednesday.
It is the first time since 2005 the Zephyrs will have two player representatives in the Midsummer Classic. That year, infielder Rick Short and outfielder Tyrell Godwin received invites.
Petersen, 25, is in his fifth season of professional baseball after being selected by the Florida Marlins in the fourth round in 2007 out of UC-Irvine. He leads the Zephyrs and ranks 13th in the Pacific Coast League with a .342 batting average, and also leads the club with 82 hits, 46 runs scored and 19 doubles. From April 23 - June 12, Petersen reached base safely in 34 of 35 games, compiling a .365 batting average over that span.
Garate, 26, is a 10-year pro veteran, having pitched in the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals organizations before signing with the Marlins as a free agent last November. The left-hander allowed just two runs over his first 19 appearances this season for a 0.64 ERA, and has held opponents to a .193 batting average, fifth-best among all PCL relievers. In 27 games overall, including one start, Garate is 2-2 with a 2.55 ERA.
