New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Bowie, MD- Luis Perez allowed two hits over a season-high matching 7.2 innings to earn his eighth victory, and Brian Jeroloman drove in three runs as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats took the rubber game of a three-game set with the Bowie Baysox, 6-2, on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium. It was only the second series win against the Southern Division this season for the Fisher Cats, who also took two out of three from the Reading Phillies, June 23-25 at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Perez (8-10) now leads the Eastern League in innings pitched (138.2), and his 97 strikeouts rank third in the league after he fanned four and walked four. The left-hander yielded a first-inning single to Josh Bell (2-for-3, RBI, BB) and did not allow another hit until Ambiorix Concepcion (1-for-2, BB) led off the eighth with a single.
Bowie (61-56) scored two runs that were charged to Perez when Bell and Steve Torrealba (1-for-3, BB, RBI) hit consecutive RBI singles off Edgar Estanga in the eighth, drawing the Baysox to within 6-2. After Estanga walked Miguel Abreu (0-for-3, BB) to load the bases, Danny Farquhar came out of the bullpen to put out the fire, striking out Eric Crozier (0-for-4) to end the inning.
Farquhar tacked on two more strikeouts and worked around a ninth-inning walk to register his 10th save in 12 chances for New Hampshire (53-64).
The Fisher Cats gave Perez plenty of run support when they batted around in the top of the first inning, bombarding Bowie starter Tim Bascom for five runs on five hits and two walks. Brad Emaus (0-for-3, SF, RBI) scored Todd Donovan (1-for-4, BB, R), who singled, with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. After Bascom walked David Cooper (0-for-3, BB, R) and Adam Calderone (0-for-3, BB, R) on eight straight pitches to load the bases, Jeroloman (2-for-4, 3 RBI, R) lined a two-out, two-run single, and Nick Gorneault (1-for-4, RBI) and Jonathan Diaz (1-for-3, RBI, BB) followed with back-to-back RBI singles for a commanding 5-0 lead.
Facing Bascom in the third, Darin Mastroianni (1-for-3, BB, SB, R) walked, stole second base for his 23rd steal of the season, and scored on Jeroloman's two-out single to right for a 6-0 lead.
All eight Fisher Cats' hits were singles, and five of their six RBIs came on two-out hits.
Bascom (2-6) was tagged for six runs on six hits on three innings to suffer his sixth straight loss. The right-hander fanned two and walked four.
The Fisher Cats look to make it three straight wins when they open a three-game weekend series with the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark on Friday night at 7:05pm. Ex-Curve right-hander Sean Smith (3-3, 2.77) makes his second New Hampshire start, and second against his former team, while Altoona counters with left-hander Daniel Moskos (8-9, 4.11). Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
The Fisher Cats open a three-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium against the Connecticut Defenders on Tuesday, August 18, at 7:05pm. The first 1,000 kids in attendance will receive a Free Fisher Cats Backpack, courtesy of U.S. Cellular, and it will be Halloween Night, in conjunction with Fright Kingdom. The night will include trick-or-treating and a costume contest for the fans. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
