Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced today that they have signed forward Jake Guentzel to an amateur tryout contract.
Guentzel, a third round pick (77th overall) by Pittsburgh at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, comes to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after a successful junior season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Guentzel reached double digits in goal scoring for the second time in his collegiate career and led the Mavericks in 2015-16 with 46 points (19G-27A) while serving as co-captain.
Over the course of his three seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, the native of Woodbury, Minn. earned 40 goals and 79 assists for 119 career points, good enough for sixth all-time in program history.
In 2014-15, Guentzel led the Mavericks to their first ever berth in the NCAA Frozen Four. He was named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's inaugural All-Rookie Team following his freshman season in 2013-14. During his freshman campaign, Guentzel spent significant time as a linemate to current Penguin Josh Archibald.
Prior to attending Nebraska-Omaha, Guentzel spent one season in the United States Hockey League with the Sioux City Musketeers in 2012-13. He led the team with 73 points (29G-44A) in 60 games, 32 points more than the Musketeers' next-highest scorer. Guentzel was rewarded for his efforts by being awarded USHL Rookie of the Year.
The Penguins' next home game is Wednesday, Mar. 23 against the Binghamton Senators. Individual tickets for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton games can be purchased at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza box office, through all Ticketmaster outlets, or by contacting the Penguins directly at (570) 208-7367.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton season ticket packages, including 12-game and Flexbook plans, are available by contacting the Penguins directly at (570) 208-7367.
