Charlotte Checkers News Release
RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forward Derek Ryan to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Ryan, 29, made his NHL debut and netted his first NHL goal with the Hurricanes on March 1 at New Jersey, and has appeared in three games for Carolina this season. The Spokane, WA, native leads all Checkers skaters in goals (21) and points (46) this season, in 63 games played. Ryan totaled 15 goals and 45 assists (60 points) in 55 games for Orebro of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2014-15, earning Forward of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in the SHL. Prior to playing in Sweden, Ryan (5'10", 170 lbs.) spent three seasons in the Austrian league after completing a collegiate career at the University of Alberta. Ryan also played parts of four seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the final two of which were under current Hurricanes Head Coach Bill Peters.
The Hurricanes visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday (7 p.m., FOX Sports Carolinas, Hurricanes Radio Network), before returning home for back-to-back home games on Saturday against the New York Islanders and Sunday against the New Jersey Devils.
