Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - A power-play goal by Riley Holzapfel with 2:49 left in regulation propelled the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins past the Toronto Marlies, 2-1 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Holzapfel would give the Penguins their first lead of the night with less than three minutes to go in the third by tipping in a Simon Despres slapshot. Standing by the near circle, Holzapfel was able to redirect the low blast over the left pad of Marlies goalie Ben Scrivens.
Despres knotted the game up at 9:27 of the final frame, lifting a backhand to the top of the Toronto net. Benn Ferriero had the initial chance in front of the Toronto net, but was denied by Scrivens before Despres deposited the rebound past the extended glove hand of the Marlies netminder.
After almost 47 minutes of scoreless hockey, Toronto notched the first goal of the game, capitalizing on a Penguins turnover behind the net. Jerry D'Amigo, on the forecheck, knocked the puck loose and centered it for Will Acton. Acton snapped a wrister over the glove hand of Jeff Zatkoff at the 6:55 mark of the third.
Zatkoff made 31 saves for his seventh win in eight starts. Scrivens stopped 23 shots in the losing effort.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has now gone 8-2-0-0 in its last 10 games and has won four straight at home.
