St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Netminder Niklas Svedberg made 31 saves and stopped all five IceCaps in the shootout as the Providence Bruins slipped past the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
Ryan Spooner scored once in regulation and added the only goal in the shootout to pace the Bruins (7-7-0-1) offensively. Eddie Pasquale was under fire for the second consecutive start, making 38 saves. Zach Redmond had a goal and an assist for the IceCaps (8-10-0-0) while Jason Jaffray notched the tying goal on the power play late in the third.
After nearly 40 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Bruins broke through with just five seconds remaining in the middle frame. Alden Hirschfeld made his way into the IceCaps zone a slid a shot along the ice from just to the right of the faceoff circle that squeaked through Pasquale's pads to give Providence a 1-0 lead heading into the third.
St. John's didn't waste any time tying things up in the third period. After a scramble at the side of the net, the puck squirted loose to a wide open Redmond in front of the net, and the blueliner beat Svedberg with a well-placed wrist shot for his team-leading fifth of the season, making it 1-1, 58 seconds into the third.
Just 37 second later, Spooner got sent in alone after a great pass from Chris Bourque, and the rookie centre went backhand and slipped a shot through Pasquale's legs, giving Providence a 2-1 advantage.
St. John's clawed back once again on Jaffray's second of the season on a power play late in the third. Redmond circled around the net and passed cross-crease to Max Macenauer, who played the puck off his skate but fanned on the shot. Jaffray skated through the slot and found the loose puck, sweeping it past Svedberg for the tying goal with only 3:25 left in regulation and sending the game to overtime.
After nothing was decided in the extra frame - aside from an interesting stretch where the teams played three-on-three thanks to a pair of minor penalties - Spooner's shootout marker was the only goal the Bruins needed, as Svedberg stopped all five IceCaps' shooters.
St. John's went 1-for-4 on the power play while killing off all three Providence man advantages.
