Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins could not find their stride in a 5-1 loss to the Hershey Bears on Sunday at the Giant Center. Jacob Micflikier and Ryan Potulny each registered a pair of goals to lead the Bears' offense.
Though Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed the edge in offensive zone opportunities to start the game, it remained a scoreless tie until the 14:00 mark. A failed clearing attempt by the Penguins gave Chris Bourque possession of the puck on the near circle and his pass through the crease was tipped in by Potulny for the 1-0 Bears' edge.
Hershey's power play unit then went to work less than two minutes later. Standing in the high slot, Bourque sent a slap pass to the left post that Micflikier redirected over the blocker of Brad Thiessen.
In the second period, the Bears converted again on the man-advantage to make the score 3-0. Micflikier stationed himself at the left hashmark of the Penguins' zone and knocked Patrick McNeill's point shot down and through the pads of Thiessen.
The Penguins again had the jump early in the third, but they fell further behind as D.J. King fired a turnaround pass toward the net that Garret Mitchell batted home at 2:30 of the frame.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton broke up the shutout bid by Hershey goalie Braden Holtby at 11:19 when Ben Street sent a cross-zone pass that a driving Jason Williams hammered to the back of the net.
Bourque gathered his third assist on the Potulny's goal that completed the scoring with 5:07 remaining in regulation.
Thiessen's record went to 20-13-2 on the season after making 28 saves on 33 shots. The Penguins were 0-for-1 on the power play and 4-of-6 on the penalty kill.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins take the ice against the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:05 PM. For tickets and more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
