Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Colin McDonald found the back net of twice to help the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Binghamton Senators on Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. It was the 500th regular season win for the Penguins and allowed them to pull into first place in the Eastern Conference at 15-7-1-4.
Entering the final period in a 2-2 deadlock, Zach Sill gave the Penguins their first lead of the contest as he deflected Carl Sneep's blueline shot down and bouncing past Robin Lehner at 8:01 for his third goal of the season.
McDonald put the cherry on top of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's milestone win on an empty-net tally - his team-leading 22nd point of the year - with 7.1 seconds left in regulation.
Consecutive penalties assessed to the Penguins in the opening minutes of the game would give Binghamton a 5-on-3 opportunity and a chance to break the scoreless tie. Stephane DaCosta would do just that at 7:17 with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that found its way over the glove of Brad Thiessen.
The Penguins would not be able to even the contest later on a man-advantage in the second period, but soon after the power play expired Eric Tangradi found McDonald at 8:38 for a rocket snap shot that sailed over the shoulder of Lehner.
With the match tied at one and six minutes left in middle frame, a second 5-on-3 would put Binghamton back on top. DaCosta set up Mike Hoffman for a one-timer from the right dot which slipped under the glove of Brad Thiessen.
Ben Street responded on the power play as Alex Grant sprung him for a breakaway and backhander that dropped into the net with 1:53 until the second intermission
Thiessen stopped 22 out of 24 shots to raise his record to 11-6-2.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head back to Syracuse on Friday, December 16 to battle the Crunch at 7:30 PM. For more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
