Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Adam Berkhoel made 46 saves and the Penguins exploded for four goals in the second period as the Lowell Devils fell, 5-0, on Wednesday night at the Tsongas Arena.
After a scoreless first period in which Berkhoel turned aside 17 shots from the Devils, the Penguins built a three-goal cushion over the course of 4:22 in the second. The 0-0 tie was broken at 8:17 when Jeff Taffe cut to the slot and redirected a low pass by Janne Pesonen through the five-hole of netminder Scott Clemmensen. Chris Minard made it 2-0 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 12:10 with wrist shot from the near circle that beat Clemmensen over the right shoulder to the top of the net. Just 29 seconds later, during a 4-on-4, Taffe struck again as he accepted a pass from behind the net by TJ Kemp and fired a shot inside the far post.
The Penguins upped the score to 4-0 with under two minutes left before the second intermission, when Luca Caputi wrapped in a loose puck from the right side of the net.
Devils goalie Dave Caruso came into the game for the third period in relief of Clemmensen, who finished with 18 saves over two periods of work. Pesonen completed the scoring with a hard shot that beat Caruso glove-side with 2:41 left in regulation.
Despite a season-high 46 shots and nine power play opportunities, the Devils could not solve Berkhoel, who gathered his first shutout of the season.
The Lowell Devils take to the road for a three-game stretch beginning this Saturday, October 25 versus the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m. The Devils are next home on Saturday, November 1 when they again face the Falcons at 7:00 p.m. Listen to all of the action live on 980AM-WCAP as Ryan Johnston brings you all of the play-by-play.
