Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - Rookie forward Zack Smith scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to lead the Binghamton Senators to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Albany River Rats Wednesday night at the Times Union Center.

Albany scored the game's first goal just seven seconds into a 5-on-3 power play when defenseman Mark Flood blasted home a one-timer at 12:24 for his second goal of the season. Jakub Petruzalek and Casey Borer both assisted on the goal, but it was Nicolas Blanchard, standing at the top of the crease, who screened Binghamton goaltender Brian Elliott. The River Rats doubled their lead at 15:54 when Blanchard skated the puck from behind the Senators net and slid a backhand shot through Elliott's leg pads for a 2-0 lead.

The River Rats goal scoring continued at 5:29 of the second period as Mike Angelidis redirected a Brett Carson slap shot into the net for his first goal of the season and 3-0 Rats lead. But things changed in the second period. After being out-shot by Albany 11-6 in the first period, Binghamton reversed the tides and out-shot the River Rats 32-15 over the final forty minutes of regulation. The B-Sens got on the board when Ryan Shannon squeezed a sharp angle shot between the closing leg pads of Albany netminder Daniel Manzato at 11:23, yet Albany held a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

Six minutes into the third period Senators defenseman Derek Smith scored a power play goal to cut Albany's lead to one; by that point the momentum had fully shifted in Binghamton's direction. Manzato turned away a number of close chances, including a highlight-reel worthy diving stick save. Just when it seemed like the Rats had weathered the storm, rookie forward Zack Smith tied the game by lifting a backhand shot that skimmed off the underside of the cross bar and into the top shelf at 16:27. Since neither team could find the winning goal in regulation, the game went to overtime, Albany's first extra session of the new season.

The overtime period lasted a mere 33 seconds, as Zack Smith picked up turnover just inside the Albany blue line, walked it in on a breakaway goal and tucked his shot inside the far post to seal Binghamton's incredible comeback.

Senators goaltender Brian Elliot made 23 saves on 26 shots to earn the win, helping Binghamton improve to 4-0-0-1 on the season. Daniel Manzato stopped 35-of-39 shots and took the overtime loss, as Albany (1-2-1-0) gained one point in the standings. The Senators finished 1-for-4 on the power play and out-shot the River Rats 39-26; Albany was 1-for-8 with the man advantage.

Friday night, October 24th, the River Rats will travel to Springfield for a 7:30 pm face off with the Falcons at MassMutual Center. Albany returns home for a Saturday, October 25th afternoon matinee against the Philadelphia Phantoms; the game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start at the Times Union Center.
