Penguins Beat Pirates 5-1

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania - The Penguins dealt the Pirates their second straight loss by a score of 5-1. Portland will look to salvage a win from its three game weekend road trip tomorrow in Albany as the Pirates take on the River Rats at 5:00.

Portland gave up the first goal for the sixth straight game as Chris Minard scored his 18th of the season just 4:16 into the game with Jean-Michel Daoust grabbing the only assist. Minard made his return to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after a seven game stint with Pittsburgh. Less than two minutes later the Penguins struck again when Danny Richmond scored his first goal of the season from Luca Caputi and Nick Johnson. Wilkes-Barre grabbed the 2-0 lead and would not relent, scored yet again as Jean-Michel Daoust scored his third goal of the season. Janne Pesonen and Bill Thomas each picked up an assist on the play, as the Penguins first three goals came in a span of just 3:14. That would close the first period scoring as the Penguins took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Pirates battled through the second period, outshooting the Penguins through most of the session. But with just 27 seconds left in the period, Chris Minard jammed a rebound home for a power play goal. Caputi and Pesonen picked up the assists on the play. Just 12 seconds later, Wilkes-Barre won an offensive draw and Ben Lovejoy cranked a slap shot past Portland goaltender Jhonas Enroth to make it 5-0. Joey Mormina and Bill Thomas got the assists on the Penguins final goal of the second period. Wilkes-Barre took its 5-0 lead into the intermission.

In the third period, Mathieu Darche scored the Pirates first goal of the game less than a minute into the session as a put a one-timer past Penguins netminder John Curry. Mark Mancari and Chris Butler picked up the assists on the play.

Jhonas Enroth stopped 20 of 25 shots he faced and took the loss, falling to 8-3-2 on the season. John Curry grabbed the win in his return to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, stopping 23 of 24 shots to improve to 4-4-0 this season.
