Crunch Drop Fifth Straight
December 13, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch fell behind early and couldn't mount a comeback, dropping their fifth straight game and losing 4-2 to the Toronto Marlies in front of 5,827 fans at the War Memorial at Oncenter.
Looking to break out of their recent four-game funk, Syracuse wanted to get off to a fast start, especially playing in front of its home crowd for the second consecutive night.
A Kevin Harvey Phil Oreskovic bout just one second into the game got the fans into it, but unfortunately Toronto was the club that jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:54 into the game and four seconds into a power play.
Tim Stapleton's shot from the left point was deflected craftily over the right shoulder of Crunch starter Ryan Munce by Toronto captain Ben Ondrus to put the Marlies out on top.
Toronto extended its lead to 2-0 when Robbie Earl found a wide open Ondrus in the slot who put one through the pads of Munce for his second of the contest just over four minutes later.
Crunch newcomer Kevin Harvey, playing in his first home game, notched his second of the season when he took a pass in the slot from Alexandre Picard and fired a wrister over the blocker of former Crunch goalie and Toronto starter Adam Munro to make it 2-1.
The Marlies regained their two-goal lead when Staffan Kronwall skated into the offensive zone and zipped a backhand past Munce to make it 3-1.
The resilient Syracuse bunch battled back to within one just three minutes later on the power play, when Tom Sestito redirected an Aaron Rome point shot past Munro to cut it to 3-2.
The Crunch battered Munro with 20 shots in the third frame, but the Toronto netminder stood tall to stinng his old team and finished with 37 saves for the game.
The Marlies put the game away with just over five minutes left when Alex Foster's bid found the back of the net to make it 4-2.
