Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - It wasn't the usual Johnson powering the Pelicans past the Blue Rocks 6-3 Tuesday night in Wilmington, DE. Pelican catcher Benji Johnson supplied a home run, a three-run shot that proved to be the game winner in the sixth.
Neither team could muster any offense until the Blue Rocks plated a run in the top of the fifth. Chase Fontaine blooped a double to left field to begin the fifth and was sacrificed to third a batter later. With two outs in the inning, Fontaine scored on a wild pitch to break the scoreless tie.
The lead was short lived as the Pelicans came storming back with four runs in the top of the sixth. Cole Miles began the inning with a base hit and went first-to-third on a Michael Fisher single. Ernesto Mejia drove home Miles from third on a sacrifice fly to left field tying the game at one. Following the sac fly Gerry Rodriguez singled to set the table for the three-run home run by Johnson into the Pelicans bullpen in left field. The home run was Johnson's sixth of the year and gave the Pelicans a 4-1 lead.
The Blue Rocks plated another run in the bottom of the sixth when Clint Robinson doubled home Derrick Robinson to cut the Pelicans' lead to two.
With two more runs in the top of the seventh, the Pelicans opened the lead up to four. The first four batters in the inning all hit safely with Miles and Fisher scoring on hits from Donell Linares and Mejia respectively.
The Blue Rocks tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth but the Pelicans held on for the 6-3 win.
Myrtle Beach starter Erik Cordier (4-3) lasted six innings and allowed just two runs on four hits. He issued one walk and struck out three to earn the win. Mario Santiago (4-10) was saddled with the loss after allowing all six Pelican runs on 10 hits over seven innings.
Left hander Jose Ortegano is slated to start for the Pelicans Wednesday night against right hander Eduardo Paulino. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE.
