Dash Silenced in Shutout Loss to Red Sox
Published on July 14, 2009 under Carolina League (CarL1) News Release
Salem, VA - Three Salem hurlers combined to silence Winston-Salem's bats as the Red Sox claimed an 8-0 win over the Dash in the series opener on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Salem starting pitcher Jose Capellan (6-2), who returned to the rotation after being demoted to the bullpen on June 6, tossed five shutout innings and held the Dash to three hits with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Relievers Armando Zerpa and Jason Rice each worked two innings and allowed a hit while combining to strikeout five to preserve the shutout.
Salem received all the run support they would need in the bottom of the fourth inning when they plated three runs off Dash starting pitcher Johnnie Lowe. The Red Sox loaded the bases with one out and Zach Borowiak and Kris Negron followed with back-to-back RBI singles. A wild pitch to the next batter allowed David Mailman to score from third base to give Salem a 3-0 lead.
The Red Sox added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Yamaico Navarro, who finished with three hits, lined a solo home run off Lowe. Salem put the game away with four runs in the eighth inning against Dash reliever Wander Perez. Borowiak, Negron and Mike Jones collected RBI doubles and Navarro added a run-scoring single to finalize the scoring.
Lowe (6-4) worked five innings and surrendered four runs on eight hits with five walks to suffer the loss. It the second consecutive time Winston-Salem has been shutout by Salem when Lowe has started. The Red Sox blanked the Dash 4-0 on July 6 at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Winston-Salem loaded the bases in the second, fifth and ninth innings, but failed to capitalize as they left 12 men on base. The lone bright spot was left fielder Tyler Kuhn, who singled in the second inning to extend his season-high hitting streak to 10 games.
The Dash and Red Sox will meet up in game two of this three-game series at Lewis-Gale Field on Wednesday night. Winston-Salem will start RHP Anthony Carter (7-4, 4.36) while Salem is expected to start RHP Bryan Price (1-4, 7.18). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
