Pelicans Walk Off In Series Finale With P-Nats

July 10, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Extra innings games on getaway day may not be the aim of any team, but getting your first walk-off win of the season might make tomorrow a less tiresome day for the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach downed the Potomac Nationals 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th inning in front of 3,462 at BB&T Coastal Field, the first time the Pelicans have earned a win in their last at-bat at home this season.

A see-saw battle from the get-go, the P-Nats struck first with a pair of runs off Pelicans starter Erik Cordier in the top of the third. Sean Rooney's two-run single gave the Nationals a 2-0 lead before the Pelicans rebounded the following frame. Gerry Rodriguez reached on an error, his second time in as many at-bats to that point, scoring Donell Linares, and Luis Sumoza grounded out one batter later to score Rodriguez.

The Pelicans surged in front for the first time in the bottom of the seventh, putting Cordier in line for the win at the time. Myrtle Beach got another pair across, this time on a two-run single by red-hot Michael Fisher, but the lead was short-lived. Potomac wrestled control back from Pelicans reliever Benino Pruneda in the eighth, pounding home plate three times on an RBI double by Sean Rooney, a passed ball and Francisco Plasencia sacrifice fly. Yet Myrtle Beach didn't quit.

Rodriguez led off the bottom of the eighth with his first homer in a Pelicans uniform, a shot to left-center to even things at five. After a ninth inning in which both teams got the would-be winning run to third base, the Pelicans closed the deal in the tenth.

C.J. Lee worked a leadoff walk against P-Nats right-hander Martin Beno and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Miles. Following a Fisher flyout, Beno intentionally walked Linares and pitched around Cody Johnson to load the bases. With two gone, the task was left to Jesus Sucre, and the Venezuelan catcher did not disappoint. Sucre scorched a one-hopper through the legs of Potomac third baseman Dan Nelson, who committed three errors on the night, and Lee came home into the celebrating arms of his teammates with the winning run.

Cordier went seven innings in the start, rebounding from recent control issues by allowing just two runs on five hits and walking three against four strikeouts. Reliever Rudy Darrow (1-0) worked two innings of scoreless relief for the win.

The 3,462 fans who attended the series finale contributed to a seven-game homestand record of 30,805, surpassing a seven-game span from July 31 to August 6 of last season in which 30,173 came through the BB&T Coastal Field gates.

The Pelicans depart tomorrow for seven straight games away from BB&T Coastal Field. Myrtle Beach opens a three-game series at Frederick tomorrow followed by four with the Wilmington Blue Rocks before returning home for the series opener of three with the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday, July 18. The following night, Atlanta Braves right-hander Tim Hudson is scheduled to be on hand for a rehab start at BB&T Coastal Field. Tickets are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling the Pelicans at (843) 918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
