Myrtle Beach Scores Six Runs in the Fifth Innings, Beat Frederick 11-4

July 10, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

With the game tied at four heading into the fifth inning, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans sent ten batters to the plate and scored six times. They never looked back, as they defeated the Frederick Keys on Friday night, 11-4.

Frederick and Myrtle Beach exchanged blows early in the ball game. In the first, with one on and one out, 3B Brandon Waring drilled his 16th homerun of the season to put the Keys atop 2-0.

The Pelicans tied the game up in the second. 1B Gerry Rodriguez led the frame off with a double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball to short, to pull the Pelicans to within one. Myrtle Beach wasn't done. With the bases empty and two down, CF CJ Lee hit a solo homerun to tie the game at two.

The game didn't stay tied for long. In the bottom half of the second, Frederick loaded the bases for 2B Ryan Adams. The slugger grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, scoring SS Jason White from third. C Billy Killian, who was on second, caught the defense napping and broke for home. He got in safely, to give the Keys a two-run lead.

In the very next inning, the Pelicans tied it up again. With two on and one out, C Benji Johnson hit a two-run double to knot the game at two.

That's where it stayed until the fifth. Five Pelicans' hits and two costly errors by Adams at second led to six Myrtle Beach runs (only three earned).

The Pelicans would manufacture an 11th run in the seventh inning to win by a final of 11-4.

RHP Brandon Beachy got the win after tossing four scoreless innings of relief. He's now 2-0. LHP Rick Zagone took the loss for Frederick. The Keys' starter tonight, Zagone allowed seven earned runs in 4.1 innings, as he drops to 0-2.

The Keys and the Pelicans will meet in game two of a three-game set Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM. LHP Zach Britton is scheduled to start for Frederick. It's Beach Night at the ballpark. Fireworks will follow the game. For ticket info, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
