Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.
LAST NIGHT ... The Pelicans registered four hits in a losing effort Wednesday, falling 5-0 against the Potomac Nationals at TicketReturn.com Field. The Birds have now lost 12 of their last 13 games but still hold a slim divisional lead. Nick Martinez took the loss despite striking out eight, his second highest total of the season.
LEADING (BARELY) ... With Winston-Salem's loss last night against Salem, the Pelicans lead in the southern division remains at a half game. It's the Pelicans slimmest lead since entering play tied for first on April 24th. The Pelicans haven't trailed in the division since entering play a game back on April 21st. The Pelicans play 12 more games in the first half.
TABLES HAVE TURNED.. The Pelicans started the season 18-4 at home and at one point strung together 11 straight home wins. The 18-4 mark at the time was the best home winning percentage in minor league baseball. The Birds are currently riding a six-game home losing streak with two of the losses coming in extra innings.
STREAKING ... Rougned Odor's eight-game hitting streak came to a close Wednesday with an 0-for-4. This season Odor has pieced together three streaks of at least seven games. The second baseman has 57 hits in 55 games this season and has the top batting average on the team.
UP NEXT ... Tonight is "Guaranteed Great Weather Night" - if we get a drop of rain after 6 p.m. all fans will get a voucher to come to another game. If more than .25 inches falls, one lucky fan will win $10,000.00.
COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back postseasons in 2011 and 2012. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.
ON THE AIR ... All 140 Myrtle Beach Pelicans games in 2013 can be heard on Fox Sports Radio on the Grand Strand (AM 1050 and FM 101.9). Video for all 70 home games is available online at www.milb.tv.
