Carolina Mudcats News Release
Wilmington, Del. - For the second straight night, the Wilmington Blue Rocks surged ahead by five, only to hold on for a 6-4 win against the Carolina Mudcats. Carolina (20-39) finished with two wins in their seven-game road trip.
Cody Anderson (5-3) tossed his shortest outing of the year for the Mudcats, allowing four runs on six hits in only three innings of work. It was the first time in 12 starts that the right-hander failed to make it through five.
Malcolm Culver (2-3) earned the win for Wilmington (31-29) in relief after starter Tyler Sample failed to go the minimum five innings to qualify for the win. Culver tossed 2.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits.
Trailing 6-1 in the top of the ninth, Francisco Lindor singled for his second hit of the night. Joey Wendle followed with a triple into the right field corner, scoring Lindor. Jerrud Sabourin launched a ground-rule double to left that bounced into the Mudcats' bullpen. Wendle scored easily on the play. Bo Greenwell sent a fly ball to the right field wall for a sacrifice fly, scoring Sabourin from third. The run cut the Rocks' lead to two, but that's all the Mudcats could muster.
The Rocks got to Anderson in the first inning. Justin Trapp doubled to lead off, and stole home on a delayed, double steal for a 1-0 lead. Daniel Mateo and Geulin Beltre both singled in a run for a 3-0 lead after one. Wilmington made it 4-0 on an RBI-double by Lane Adams in the second.
Carolina broke up the shutout bid against Culver when Sabourin singled home Lindor with two out in the seventh.
The Blue Rocks added two more off Michael Goodnight in the last of the seventh for a 6-1 lead. Wilmington's runs came on two hits, two walks and a hit batter.
The Mudcats return home on Friday, June 7th. The first game against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will feature Friday Night Fireworks, presented by Carolina Ford Dealers. First pitch at Five County Stadium is set for 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets today by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
