Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SOX SURGE PAST DASH FOR SHUTOUT

Salem set the tone with a four-run first inning and held the Dash to only two hits in an 8-0 victory Wednesday at LewisGale Field. Red Sox starter Henry Owens worked around five walks to toss five scoreless innings for the win, while Matty Ott (3.0 IP, 1 H, 5 K) and Manny Rivera (1.0 IP, 2 BB) combined for the two-hit shutout, the Dash's second shutout defeat of the season. Winston-Salem stranded eight runners and went 1-for-8 with men in scoring position. Dash starter Myles Jaye worked through six innings, but he surrendered seven runs in his first High-A loss.

A RARE TRIP ON THE WRONG SIDE

Even though the Dash were on the wrong side of a shutout defeat Wednesday, the club still leads the Carolina League with six shutout wins. Winston-Salem is tied for third among the 30 High-A teams in blankings, trailing only St. Lucie (8) and Fort Myers (7). A year ago, the Dash paced the CL with 15 shutout wins, and Winston was held to zero runs a league-low five times.

CURLEY'S CLIMB

Winston-Salem infielder Chris Curley is one of two players in the Carolina League who is in the top six in batting average (.291, 6th), home runs (9, T-4th), RBIs (40, 2nd), hits (64, T-2nd) and runs (38, T-3rd). Only Lynchburg's Robby Hefflinger (.295, 16, 39, 64, 37) can also make this claim on the circuit. In his last 11 games, Curley is hitting .375 (15-for-40) with two homers, 14 RBIs and eight runs scored.

BASSITT'S BIG HALF

Dash starter Chris Bassitt is 12th in the Carolina League with a 3.47 earned run average. The righty has had two rough starts and nine gems thus far this season. The former Akron Zip allowed a combined 15 earned runs in 7.1 innings during his starts on May 15 (vs. Myrtle Beach) and May 27 (vs. Frederick). In his other nine outings, Bassitt boasts a 1.47 ERA (9 ER in 55.0 IP). In two starts against Salem, Bassitt has allowed just two earned runs in 13 innings.

ONE HALF GAME IN HALF ONE RACE

With 11 games remaining in the first half, Winston-Salem is a half-game behind Myrtle Beach for the top spot in the Southern Division standings. Myrtle Beach has lost 12 of its last 13, including a 5-0 loss at home to Potomac Wednesday. After tonight's series finale, the Dash will finish the first half with seven games against Wilmington and three versus Lynchburg, while the Pelicans take on Carolina (8) and Frederick (3) down the stretch following their series finale with the P-Nats. The Red Sox are three-and-a-half games behind the Birds in the division race and have 13 games left in half one.

FORMER YANKEE BRACKMAN IS ABOARD

Righty Andrew Brackman, who pitched briefly for the Yankees in 2011, was activated from the disabled list on Wednesday. Brackman, who signed with the White Sox during the offseason, had been on the DL the entire season. The former NC State product was the 30th overall pick in the 2007 draft, and he owns a 5.36 ERA in his four-year minor league career.

ON-BASE STREAK STILL MiLB'S BEST

Adam Heisler extended his on-base streak to 43 games with a two-run single and a walk on Tuesday. Heisler, who received a day off on Wednesday, boasts the longest active on-base streak in Minor League Baseball. Jordan Lennerton of Toledo (Triple-A, Detroit) has the second-longest active streak, and he extended it to 37 with a 1-for-4 effort yesterday. Heisler has reached safely in all 21 of his games in Winston this year. The Mobile, Ala., native is hitting .301 (50-for-166) with 18 RBIs and 30 runs during the run, which began late last season in Great Falls.

CRUCIAL HOMESTAND ON DECK

Following Thursday's series finale, the Dash return home for a six-game homestand featuring Wilmington and Lynchburg. The Dash are 6-1 versus the Blue Rocks this season, but Winston is just 2-6 against Lynchburg. The Dash boast the best home record in the minors since 2010.
