Three-Run Fifth Guides Blue Rocks to 30th Win
June 6, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
WILMINGTON, DE- With Carolina starter Nick Pasquale (0-3) on the ropes, the Wilmington Blue Rocks scored three runs and sent eight men to bat in the bottom of the fifth, as the Blue Crew defeated the Mudcats 6-4 on Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. On the mound, Sam Selman (4-4) picked up his fourth win of the year for the home team, tossing five innings of one-run baseball, despite battling command issues in the early going. Thanks to the victory, the Rocks return to one game over .500 (30-29) for the year, but remain 4.5 games out of first following Potomac's 5-0 shutout win over Myrtle Beach.
The Blue Crew did not take long to get on the scoreboard against Pasquale. Justin Trapp bounced the second pitch of the game over the head of third baseman Zack MacPhee, and came home one pitch later on a single to center by Daniel Mateo. That lead looked like it might vanish in the top of the second, following a pair of walks by Selman and a base hit by Jordan Smith, but the former Vanderbilt Commodore retired the next three batters in order, while he navigated his way around a walk, hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch in the third.
Carolina eventually evened the score in the fourth. Following a lead-off single by Charlie Valerio, Selman got a pair of fly ball outs, but the lefty committed an error while covering on a groundball hit to first. Working with a man in scoring position, Tyler Naquin then singled home his teammate to tie the game at one. However Wilmington broke the deadlock in the home-half. Reaching on an error, Jared Schlehuber moved to second on a fielder's choice by Jack Lopez, before both runners came home on a single to left by Tyler Chism.
Wilmington proceeded to go for the jugular in the fifth. With one out, Mateo slammed a solo home run to right-centerfield, while by Lane Adams doubled and moved to third on an error by Bo Greenwell in leftfield. Jared Schlehuber then drove home his teammate with a triple to centerfield before Jack Lopez completed the scoring with a single to center.
Down 6-1, Carolina tallied the final three runs of the game, getting two runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by MacPhee and a sac-fly by Naquin, and one more in the seventh, but could not muster anymore against the relief duo of Kellen Moen and Scott Alexander. On for the final two frames, Alexander earned the save, facing one over the minimum.
Wilmington concludes its four-game series with Carolina on Thursday night and its seven-game homestand on Thursday night at 7:05 on the Riverfront. Right-hander Tyler Sample (0-1, 1.42) takes the hill for the Blue Crew and will be opposed by Mudcats righty Cody Anderson (5-2, 2.56). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35, and the broadcast can be heard on 89.7 WGLS-FM, or on Bluerocks.com. For ticket information, call 302-888-BLUE or visit Bluerocks.com.
Pebbles of Knowledge:
Sam Selman had an up and down night, but battled to pick up his fourth win. It was the southpaw's third win in his last four starts, and his second over the Mudcats in 2013. That first victory over Carolina came in his Advanced-A debut, when he tossed five innings and allowed only one hit. He also managed to work into the fifth inning for the fourth straight start despite needing 42 combined pitches to escape the second and third innings. That included three four-pitch walks over the course of nine batters. Effectively wild, Selman walked four, threw two wild pitches, hit a batter and struck out two.
Jared Schlehuber equaled his 2012 RBI total with an RBI triple in the three-run Wilmington fifth. Going 1-for-4 on the evening, Schlehuber picked up his 19th RBI, the same number he posted at Rookie-Idaho Falls a season ago. However this year, he reached that number in 15 fewer games. The triple was also the first of Schlehuber's professional career. Since joining the Blue Crew from Extended Spring Training, the Colorado native is hitting .291 over 22 games with two homers, 19 RBIs, a triple and six doubles.
Despite having a good night, Wilmington was prone to the double-play ball. Over the first three innings, the Blue Crew grounded into three twin-killings, all of which were started by Mudcats first baseman Ryan Battaglia. The three double plays ties the most the Blue Crew have hit into all season, while the team has hit into 10 double plays over their last six games.
Scott Alexander picked up his first save at the Advanced-A level, and his first since April 18 when he earned the first of his career at Low-A Lexington. Outstanding over this homestand, the lefty moved his ERA from 0.84 to 0.77, allowing no runs on two hits over six innings while striking out five. He has not allowed a run since May 15 against Potomac, and has still not given up any earned runs in games played at Frawley Stadium. Over 15.2 innings on the Riverfront, he has allowed six hits, walked four and struck out 12.
