Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SALEM, VA (JUNE 6, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash wrapped up their five-game series against the Salem Red Sox with a 5-4 win Thursday night at LewisGale Field to tie Myrtle Beach for first place in the Southern Division with 10 games remaining.

With the game tied at four entering the eighth, Joey DeMichele led the frame off with a single against Noe Ramirez (2-1). The Dash (31-29) then executed a perfect hit and run as Chris Curley singled with DeMichele on the move, allowing the second baseman to get all the way to third on the play. Kevan Smith followed with a double play that chased home DeMichele, a run that proved to be the difference in the game.

With the one-run lead on the line, Jeremy Erben (2-0) tossed the last of his three scoreless innings out of the bullpen before turning things over to Cody Winiarski for the ninth. Winiarski struck out the side to tie Lynchburg's Nate Hyatt for the league lead in saves with seven.

After Salem (26-32) took the lead with a tally in the bottom of the first, the Dash answered with three to take the lead in the second. Jeremy Farrell started the frame off by drawing a walk from Red Sox starter William Cuevas and came around on an RBI double by Courtney Hawkins. The next man up was Mark Haddow, and he drove Hawkins home with a single. After moving up on a groundout, Haddow swiped third with Grant Buckner at the plate. Later in the at-bat, Buckner drove him in with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.

Winston-Salem would add to their lead in the third. Farrell hit a solo shot to the opposite field, his ninth homer of the year, to push the lead to three. Farrell paces the CL with 42 RBIs.

The Dash would have their lead cut to one after Salem hit solo home runs against Winston starter Chris Bassitt in consecutive innings. In the fourth, Brandon Jacobs took the righty deep, and in the fifth it was Henry Ramos doing the damage.

The Red Sox would then tie things up in the sixth when Keury De La Cruz continued his monster week, driving Garin Cecchini home for his ninth RBI of the series. Winston escaped further damage on a diving catch on a line drive by DeMichele, which started an inning-ending double play.

On Friday night, the Dash will return to BB&T Ballpark to begin their final homestand of the first half. The homestand kicks off with a three-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. In the opener, Winston-Salem will send right-hander Chris Beck (5-6, 3.19 ERA) to the mound, while Wilmington will counter with a righty of their own in Kyle Zimmer (0-5, 5.54 ERA). Coverage begins with the Pregame Dash at 6:45, and first pitch is scheduled for 7.

Friday's game will be followed by a fireworks show, and kids will have the chance to run the bases as well. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
