Salem Sox vs. Dash - Game Notes - June 6, 2013

June 6, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

A Baker's Dozen: Salem has 13 games left in its first half, and despite a 26-31 overall record, the Sox are right in the thick of the Southern Division chase. With Myrtle Beach dropping 12 of its last 13 games, the Winston-Salem Dash have closed to within a half game of the Pelicans, while the Sox are just three and a half behind the struggling Birds. Since dropping eight of ten to fall eight games below .500, Salem has won five of its last seven. The winner of the first half is guaranteed a playoff berth in September regardless of what happens in the second half.

Living Dangerously: Despite a career-high five walks, Henry Owens dealt five scoreless innings on Wednesday night to earn his fourth win of the season. The lefthander needed 92 pitches in five frames, but worked around one single and five walks to complete the fifth. While his 3.21 ERA is currently narrowly outside the top 10 in the league, Owens is second in the league with 68 strikeouts, third in the league in opponent's average (.190), and tied for fourth in the league with his 1.11 WHIP. In two starts against the Dash this year, Owens is 2-0 with 1.64 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 11 innings.

Sanchez Not Switching: For the first time in his career, Felix Sanchez is simply a righthanded hitter. After struggling from the left side of the plate, the Dominican outfielder has removed that facet from his game and has experienced success in his return to Salem. He went 0-for-4 in his first game back with the Sox four days ago, but since has gone 6-for-14 with three straight multi-hit games. Reaching base more often should create many more scoring opportunities for the Sox as a result of Sanchez' superb speed. In just 21 games this year, Sanchez has 11 steals in 15 tries. Last year, he had 25 stolen bases in just 46 games.

Goodbye Baseball: For the first time in a Salem Sox uniform, Blake Swihart went yard on Tuesday evening. His solo shot in the fifth broke up the shutout and removed the zero from his homer stat sheet. Swihart blasted seven round-trippers in the South Atlantic League with Greenville in 2012, the last of which came on August 22 against Augusta. His .288 season average is currently tied for seventh best in the league among qualifiers.

Keury the Crusher: Keury De La Cruz led the Red Sox with four hits and five RBI in Monday's doubleheader, surging Salem in front in both games with key extra-base hits. His three-run triple in game one helped the Sox lead wire to wire in the opener, while his RBI double off the wall in left put Salem up 4-3 in the nightcap. The two-bagger was his 18th of the season, tying him with three others for the league lead. De La Crus is batting .311 at LewisGale Field this season.

Score!: It didn't take long for the Sox to score on Wednesday, and Salem extended its streak to 76 straight games with at least one run. The Sox have not been shutout since August 12, 2012 at Wilmington. Salem is the only team in the CL to score at least one in every game so far in 2013.
