Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.
LAST GAME... Drew Robinson turned in four hits including a go-ahead two-run home run in eighth inning Monday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans toppled the Frederick Keys 6-4 at Harry Grove Stadium. The Pelicans trailed 3-1 entering the eighth inning before rallying for the win. Jake Skole contributed to the Pelicans 13-hit attack with a three-hit performance.
PITCHING CHANGES ... Only Alec Asher remains from the opening day starting rotation. On Monday, right-hander Jerad Eickhoff was promoted to Double-A Frisco after going 7-3 with a 3.41 earned run average. Joining him Tuesday was fellow starter Nick Martinez, who led the team with 10 wins. Joining the Pelicans pitching staff is right-hander Michael Zouzalik who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in August of 2012 after attending a Rangers open tryout. The 23-year-old right-hander was 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 14 relief appearances in Spokane. Filling Martinez's void is left-hander Luis Parra, who has gone 5-4 with a 2.34 ERA in 15 starts in Hickory. Paul Schwendel transferred to Hickory while first round draft pick Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez joins the club from Spokane. Gonzalez was the 23rd overall pick in this year's draft.
FORMER BIRD REHABS ... Former Myrtle Beach Pelican Wilson Betemit, a big leaguer for parts of 11 seasons, will make a rehab appearance with the Frederick Keys for a second straight night. Betemit hit .277 for the Pelicans in 2001 in his age 19 season.
UP NEXT ... The Pelicans are in the midst of their second to last regular season road trip of the season and are wrapping up a three-game series at Harry Grove Stadium. The final leg of the trip will be a three-game series with the Carolina Mudcats.
COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only current Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back-to-back postseasons. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.
ON THE AIR ... All 140 Myrtle Beach Pelicans games in 2013 can be heard on Fox Sports Radio on the Grand Strand (AM 1050 and FM 101.9). Video for all 70 home games is available online at www.milb.tv.
