Woodbridge, Va. - The Carolina Mudcats and Potomac Nationals issued a combined 16 walks on Tuesday afternoon in a 9-8 victory for the home-standing Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium. The Mudcats (27-22, 49-70) lost their first road series since June when their eighth inning comeback fell short.

Greg Holt (6-0) remained unbeaten for the Nationals (29-21, 71-47) after tossing 1.2 relief frames. Rob Wort helped Potomac escape a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and finished the game for his sixth save.

Robert Whitenack (0-1) struggled with his command, walking four batters and allowing six hits. Potomac struck the right-hander for seven runs.

Trailing 9-7 in the eighth, the first baseman Jerrud Sabourin started the rally with a double off David Fischer. The right-handed reliever was able to get two outs before losing his control. Three straight walks, including one to Paddy Matera, forced in Sabourin. With the lead down to one, Potomac looked to Wort who struck out Bryson Myles to end the threat.

The Mudcats were nearly able to erase a six run deficit. Trailing 7-1 entering the fifth, Carolina reeled off five runs to cut it to one. Jordan Smith belted a two-run homer, his second of the six-game road trip, out to right.

With starter Brian Rauh on his heels, the Mudcats loaded the bases. Tony Wolters worked a walk to force in Joey Wendle. A wild pitch scored Matera and a sacrifice fly by Erik Gonzalez cut it to one before the Nationals could escape.

A two-run double by Cutter Dykstra in the last of the fifth proved to be the decider as it gave Potomac a 9-6 edge. The Mudcats tallied a run on a Wendle double in the sixth to score Smith.

Carolina returns home August 14th to host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a three-game series. Wednesday night is ECU Pirate Night at Five County Stadium. Fans wearing East Carolina University apparel receive a $5 box seat ticket at the gate. First pitch against the Pelicans is set for 7:15 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
