Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WILMINGTON, DE - The Pelicans and Blue Rocks took 13 innings to determine a winner but in the end it was the Pelicans who came away on top to take the first game of the three-game series. The Pelicans improved to 1-3 in extra inning games with the win.

The Pelicans got on top with a run in the top of first, taking advantage of C.J. Lee's leadoff double. With Lee at third, Donell Linares drove him in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put the Pelicans up 1-0.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Blue Rocks responded with two runs of their own. Derrick Robinson singled followed by a Johnny Giavotella double to begin the inning. With Robinson at third and Giavotella at second and two outs, David Lough singled both home.

With Wilmington up 2-1, the Pelicans got a solo home run from catcher Matt Kennelly, his first of the year, to even the score at two in the top of the second.

That's all the Pelicans would get off Blue Rocks starter Everett Teaford who went six innings allowing two runs on five hits. He didn't record a decision while he walked two and struck out four.

The Blue Rocks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third when Giavotella scored on a single to left that was mishandled by Cody Johnson.

Pelicans starter Edgar Osuna was finished after seven innings in which he allowed all three Blue Rocks runs but only two were earned. He also struck out three and walked one without factoring into the decision.

The Pelicans would again tie the game, this time capitalizing on a Blue Rocks error in the eighth. Linares reached on an error by Wilmington third baseman Mike Moustakas to begin the inning and was singled home by Jon Mark Owings to even the game at three.

That's how it stayed for the next five innings until Myrtle Beach broke the scoreless tie in the 13th. Freddie Freeman doubled down the right field line to begin the frame off Kelvin Villa. He scored from third three batters later on a fielders choice by Owings and an error at second base by Giavotella when he dropped a throw from shortstop Jeff Bianchi as the middle infielders tried to start a double play.

With the Pelicans on top 4-3, Tommy Palica (3) nailed down the bottom of the inning by retiring the Blue Rocks in order to earn the save. Lee Hyde (1-0) got credit for the win as he pitched scoreless 11th and 12th innings. Villa (1-4) took the loss, allowing just the one run over two innings while striking out four.

The series continues tomorrow night at 6:05 from Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE. The Pelicans will send LHP Jeff Locke to the mound while the Blue Rocks will counter with RHP Alex Caldera.
