Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg edged Potomac 1-0 in a pitchers' duel at City Stadium Friday night. The Hillcats will meet the P-Nats in game two of the weekend series on Saturday night. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
Lynchburg starter Justin Wilson set the tone early by tossing a scoreless first inning. After striking out Boomer Whiting, Wilson walked Danny Espinosa before inducing Francisco Plasencia to hit into a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Potomac starter Brad Meyers matched Wilson with a scoreless first frame by striking out the Hillcats in order. Meyers and Wilson continued to put pressure on opposing batters all night long.
Miles Durham crushed a solo home run that sailed over the left field wall in the second to give Lynchburg a 1-0 lead. Wilson and Lynchburg relievers Harrison Bishop and R. J. Rodriguez ensured that the 1-0 lead would stand by combining to shut out Potomac.
Wilson, who gave up nine hits, five earned runs and three home runs to Potomac at Pfitzner Stadium May 23, allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings against the P-Nats Friday night. The former Fresno State standout pitched around five walks, due in part to getting two timely double plays, which ended potential Potomac rallies in the first and the fourth.
Meyers was just as effective for Potomac, limiting the Cats to four hits and one run in six and two-thirds innings.
Bishop allowed a base runner in each of his three innings, but he yielded just one hit and recorded a season-high four strikeouts to emerge unscathed in each frame.
Lynchburg had an opportunity add some insurance runs and seal the victory in the eighth. Alex Presley led off the inning with a triple. The Hillcats eventually loaded the bases for Durham, but Potomac reliever Clint Everts struck out the Lynchburg right fielder to end the frame.
Wilson (3-3) won for the first time since April 21. Meyers (3-2) was charged with the loss for Potomac. Bishop was credited with his third hold and Rodriguez earned his tenth save.
With the win, Lynchburg improved to 31-16 and extended its lead over second-place Potomac to five games. The P-Nats fell to 25-20 with the loss.
Game two of the Hillcats-Potomac series is slated for 6:05 p.m. Saturday at City Stadium.
