Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Kinston starting pitcher Paolo Espino silenced the Winston-Salem bats in leading the Indians to a 5-2 victory over the Dash in the series opener on Friday night at Wake Baseball Park. Espino (1-1) dazzled as he tossed a season-high seven innings and limited the Dash to two runs on three hits to garner the win. The loss drops Winston-Salem (22-25) into a tie for second place with Kinston, as both teams trail the Salem Red Sox by half a game in the Southern Division.
The Dash grabbed an early lead with a run in the first inning against Espino. Shortstop Greg Paiml singled with one out and scored on a double by designated hitter Lee Cruz. Kinston countered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning when Cord Phelps blasted a two-run home run to put the Indians in front.
Kinston punished Daniel Hudson for three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ronald Rivas led off with a triple and scored on a RBI single by Alex Castillo. After a walk to Johnny Drennan and a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Blair put runners on second and third, Lucas Montero bounced a two-run single through a drawn-in infield to extend the Indians advantage to 5-1.
The Dash would tack on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI ground out by third baseman Joe Persichina. Any hope of a late rally by Winston-Salem was foiled by Indians reliever Chen-Chang Lee, who kept the Dash scoreless over the final two frames to collect his first save of the season. Hudson (2-2) was pulled after four innings after he allowed five runs on six hits and suffered the loss.
The Dash continues their ten-game home stand with game two of their three-game series against Kinston on Saturday night at Wake Forest baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Anthony Carter (3-3, 5.12) to the mound, while Kinston is expected to start LHP Russell Young (0-2, 5.96). The first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
