Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Pelicans plated three runs on ten hits over seven innings against their former teammate, Jeff Locke, tonight at City Stadium in Lynchburg on their way to a 6-0 win to open a three-game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats. Tonight marked the first time that Locke faced his former team since being dealt to the Pirates organization on June 3.

Cole Rohrbough set the tone early by striking out the side in order in the bottom of the first. The Pelicans came alive offensively in the third to stake the lefty to a 2-0 lead. C.J. Lee began the frame with a single and scored from second on a double by Freddie Freeman to give the Birds a 1-0 lead. Freeman scored two batters later when Donell Linares doubled him home.

Rohrbough continued to cruise keeping the Hillcats hitless until, with two outs in the fifth inning, Joel Collins hit a sinking line drive to centerfield that was ruled a trap on a diving attempt by Lee. That would be the only hit the left hander would allow. Rohrbough (4-4) left with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, and finished going five and two-thirds innings. He allowed just the one hit and struck out and walked five in the win. The five walks is a season high for Rohrbough.

In the top of the sixth, the Pelicans added another run when Cody Johnson was tripled home by Jon Mark Owings. Jason Heyward provided the fifth run of the game on a solo home run to open the eighth inning, it was his 10th of the year. Linares doubled home another pair of runs in the top of the ninth as the Pelicans took the second half opener 6-0 in Lynchburg.

Heyward and Freeman combined to go five-for-nine, scoring four runs and driving in two.

Locke (2-5) was finished after the seventh having allowed three runs as he suffered his first loss with Lynchburg.

The series continues tomorrow night as the Pelicans send right hander Jacob Thompson to the mound against righty Bryan Morris. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 at City Stadium in Lynchburg, VA.
