Hill City Howlers News Release
Stellar pitching and seven extra-base hits sparked Myrtle Beach to a 6-0 shutout of Lynchburg on Thursday night at City Stadium in the second half season opener for both teams. The Hillcats and Pelicans will meet in game two of the three game series at 6:05 p.m. Friday at Calvin Falwell Field.
Myrtle Beach seized the lead in the top of the third. C. J. Lee led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Miles. Freddie Freeman followed with an RBI double that scored Lee. After Jason Heyward grounded out, Donell Linares drove in Freeman with an RBI double, which gave the Pelicans a 2-0 advantage.
Cole Rohrbough delivered a sterling performance for the Pelicans, as the southpaw starter took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth. Joel Collins broke up Rohrbough's bid for the no-no with a two-out single in the frame. Rohrbough allowed just one hit and no runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
The Pelicans extended their lead in the top of the sixth. Cody Johnson smacked a leadoff double off Lynchburg starter Jeff Locke. After Locke retired Jesus Sucre, Johnson scored on Jon Mark Owings' RBI triple, which made it a 3-0 game.
Jason Heyward belted a solo home run off Lynchburg reliever Christian Castorri in the top of the eighth to extend the Myrtle Beach lead to 4-0. The Pelicans tacked on two additional runs off Castorri in the ninth, sealing the 6-0 victory.
The Hillcats had runners at first and second in the sixth inning, but failed to score when Tommy Palica replaced Rohrbough and retired Alex Presley to end the frame. No Lynchburg runners reached third base in the contest.
Rohrbough (4-4) earned the win for Myrtle Beach while Locke (2-5) took the loss for Lynchburg after allowing three earned runs in seven innings of work. The Hillcats have now lost three games in row for just the second time in 2009.
Lynchburg will take on Myrtle Beach in game two of the series on Friday night at 6:05. RHP Bryan Morris (2-1, 4.30 ERA) gets the start for the Cats against Myrtle Beach RHP and Danville native Jacob Thompson (0-1, 3.06 ERA).
