
Pelicans hang on in nail-biter 2-1

FREDERICK, MD - Erik Cordier kept his team in the game through his four shutout innings to start the contest for Myrtle Beach and the bullpen backed up him up as Pelican relievers allowed only one run over the games' final five innings. Keys starter Nate Nery (0-1) was effective in his start going six innings and allowing just an unearned run while striking out six in a losing effort.
Myrtle Beach got on the board with a run in the top of the top of the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Robert Marcial singled to open the inning. He then scored from second when Freddie Freeman hit into a fielder's choice to first base, and the throw to second base from the first baseman went into the outfield. That put the Pelicans on top 1-0 which is how it stayed until the eighth when Jason Heyward hit his fifth home run of the year with the bases empty and two-outs. The home run would prove to be the difference in the game in the ninth.
Benino Pruneda Jr. (1) picked up the extended save by recording the final five outs of the game for the Pelicans. The Keys would threaten in the ninth after Pruneda walked Pedro Florimon to open the inning and Matt Angle singled right behind him. The Keys got their run on a groundball back to the pitcher with runners at second and third and a man out before Pruneda got Brandon Waring to groundout to third to end the game and give the Pelicans the 2-1 win.
Cordier allowed just three hits while walking two and striking out five over his four innings worked without figuring into the decision. Carlos Rivas (2-3) took the win pitching an inning and one-third in relief without allowing a hit.
The Pelicans and the Keys wrap up the series Thursday morning with an 11:00 am start at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, MD. The Pelicans will send left hander Richard Sullivan to the mound against Frederick lefty Brian Matusz. After the game, the Pelicans return home for a weekend series beginning Friday at 7:05 at BB&T Coastal Field. The first 1,000 through the gates will receive a Chris "Butter" Ball Bobblehead on Bark in the Park Night Friday.
