Frederick Keys News Release
The Frederick Keys were on the right end of one-run games in the first two contests of this series, but tonight they were on the other side. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Keys 2-1.
LHP Nate Nery got the start for Frederick. He found himself in a slight jam in the fourth. Pelican 3B Robert Marcial and RF Jason Heyward led off the inning with back-to-back singles. The next batter, 1B Freddie Freeman, hit a ground ball to first. Keys' 1B Chris Vinyard tried to turn two, but threw the ball into left field. Marcial scored to give the Pelicans an early one-run lead.
That was all the Pelicans would get off of Nery. The southpaw went six strong innings, allowing just the unearned run on five hits. He walked one and struck out six, but left in position to get the loss.
In the top of the eighth, with RHP Brian Parker on the hill for Frederick, the Pelicans picked up an insurance run. Heyward drilled a solo homerun deep to right-center field. The top prospect's fifth long ball of the season gave the Pelicans a little breathing room.
In the ninth, with RHP Benino Pruneda on the hill, the Keys attempted to stage a rally. SS Pedro Florimon led off the inning with a walk. CF Matt Angle then hit a bloop single to left, his fourth hit of the ball game. 2B Bobby Stevens moved them up a base with a beautiful sacrafice bunt.
With two in scoring position and one out, LF Kraig Binick bounced a high chopper back to the hill. Pruneda went to first with it, allowing Florimon to score, and pulling the Keys to witihin one.
Frederick had the tying run at third with two men down, but 3B Brandon Waring grounded out to third base to end the game. The Keys left 12 runners on base in the loss.
LHP Carlos Rivas got the win. He tossed a scoreless 1.1 IP, despite walking three batters and hitting a batter. He improves to 2-3. Nery took the tough-luck loss, dropping his record to 0-1. Pruneda picked up his first save of the season.
The Keys and Pelicans will meet in the finale of this four-game set tomorrow morning at Harry Grove Stadium. It's History Day at the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
