Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
KINSTON, NC - The Pelicans scored the games' first six runs and were able to make those hold up as they picked up their third second half win.
The Pelicans wasted no time getting on the scoreboard tonight as they plated four first-inning runs against the Kinston starter Paolo Espino. With one out, seven straight reached against Espino with Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward scoring on a base hit by Cody Johnson. Benji Johnson then singled home C.J. Lee and Johnson with a two-run single to put the Pelicans up 4-0. Lee was in the game running for Donell Linares who left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the helmet.
With two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Pelicans went up 6-0. Lee walked to begin the inning, and was followed by a Cody Johnson single. Benji Johnson followed with single driving home Lee and Cody scored a batter later when Michael Fisher grounded into a double play. Espino was ejected from the game after a 1-0 pitch to Lee went behind him. That ejection led to an argument from Kinston manager Chris Tremie that got him kicked out of the game. That pitch also empied both benches, but cooler heads prevailed and the two sides stayed separated without incident.
The ejections apparently sparked Kinston as they plated fours runs in the bottom of the frame to pull within two. Cord Phelps plated both Richard Martinez and Adam Davis with a base hit off starter David Francis. Michael Braodway replaced Francis after that single and coaxed a groundout out of Lonnie Chisenhall which plated Tim Fedroff, and Phelps scored a batter later on a base hit by Ole Sheldon.
The Indians pulled within one with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Tommy Palica was able to pitch out of trouble and preserve the lead. Palica (5) stayed on to finish off the game after getting the final out of the eighth to earn the save.
Broadway (1-7) got credit for the win going two innings in relief without allowing a run. Espino (1-5) was saddled with the loss, allowing the first four runs through four innings.
The series continues Tuesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 at Grainger Stadium. Left hander Richard Sullivan is slated to start for the Pelicans against fellow lefty Ryan Morris.
