June 29, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Quality pitching and an early offensive outburst sparked Salem to a 6-2 victory over Lynchburg at Salem Memorial Ballpark Monday night. The Hillcats and Red Sox will begin a two-game series at Lynchburg's City Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:05.

Salem's Che-Hsuan Lin set the tone for the Red Sox offense by smacking a leadoff home run off Lynchburg starter Chi-Hung Cheng in the bottom of the first. Cheng retired Jason Place but gave up consecutive singles to Tim Federowicz and Yamaico Navarro, which put Red Sox at the corners with one out. After Cheng retired Anthony Rizzo, Luis Exposito drove in Federowicz with a single.

Navarro scored when Eddie Prasch committed an error on a ground ball off the bat of David Mailman and Salem led 3-0 after one inning of play.

The Red Sox extended their lead with a pair of runs in the second. Kris Negron singled to start the frame and reached second on a wild pitch from Cheng. Negron scored when Place laced an RBI double to left field. Federowicz knocked in Place with the second of his three singles, which gave Salem a 5-0 edge. Salem tallied 15 hits for the game, nine of which were surrendered by Cheng.

While the Salem offense struck for five runs in the first two frames, the Cats struggled mightily against Red Sox starter Kyle Weiland, who limited Lynchburg to four hits and no runs in five and two-thirds innings of work.

The Hillcats finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Jared Keel doubled off Salem reliever Ryne Miller to lead off the frame and reached third on Prasch's groundout to second base. Chase d'Arnaud hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Keel raced home to reduce the deficit to 5-1.

Lynchburg drew closer with a run in the eighth inning. Jordy Mercer and Matt Hague hit consecutive singles off Miller to start off the inning. Following a one-out walk to Jamie Romak, Mercer scored on an RBI groundout by Alex Presley, which made it a 5-2 contest.

The Red Sox tacked on an insurance run off Lynchburg reliever Christian Castorri in the bottom of the eighth and Salem's Derrick Loop worked a scoreless ninth inning to seal the 6-2 win. Weiland (3-6) picked up the win for Salem while Cheng (6-3) was charged with the loss for the Cats.

Lynchburg and Salem will meet in the first game of a two-game series at City Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
