Pelicans Game Notes
April 21, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
GOTTA SUPPORT THE TEAM: The attendance last night at BB&T Coastal Field of 5,343 was the Pelicans' largest of the season. Even better, it was the biggest mid-week April crowd (excluding Opening Day) in Pelicans history. The average attendance through six games (3,869) is 407 more than it was through six games in 2010.
DÃJÃ VU: Travis Adair knocked the game-winning hit in all three home victories over the Dash. His single in the seventh Monday put the Pelicans ahead for good and in left field he threw out the tying run at the plate to end the game. In Tuesday's five-run rally in the eighth, it was Adair's single that gave the Birds the lead. He saved the best for last on Wednesday with the Pelicans' first walk-off hit of the season. Adair is 8-for-18 in his last five games and his .378 batting average is fifth-highest in the Carolina League. He is tied for third in the circuit in hits with teammate Mike Olt with 17.
PIP PIP, CHIRINO: With a three-hit game last night, Santiago Chirino raised his batting average to .350, rocketing to sixth on the Carolina League leaderboard. Last night was his second three-hit game in his last four and his fifth with multiple hits this year. The Venezuelan is 8-for-19 in his last four contests. In addition to solid defense at second base, Chirino is the fifth-toughest hitter in the league to strike out, with only four whiffs in 40 at bats.
LEADING THE WAY: The Pelicans aren't just leading the Carolina League in batting average now. Hitting .276 as a team, the pitchers have backed them up. As the bullpen posted seven shutout innings to end last night's win, the team ERA was lowered to a league-leading 2.84, moving ahead of Wilmington's 2.94 mark.
