Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Frederick, MD - The Hillcats exploded against the Keys Thursday night with nine runs on 16 hits including three home runs and three triples on their way to a 9-1 victory over Frederick. Zeke Spruill (1-1) took a no-hitter into the fifth and finished with seven shutout innings earning his first win of the season.
Lynchburg scored first for the third straight game as Andrelton Simmons singled in L.V. Ware in the top of the third inning. Then in the fifth, Todd Cunningham tripled in Matt Weaver making it 2-0 Hillcats.
Two runs were more than enough for Spruill to work with as he cruised through seven scoreless frames. He struck out the side in order in the second and finished with a season high eight strikeouts on the night. His bid for a no-hitter was broken up in the fifth when Dale Mollenhauer singled on a groundball up the middle. Simmons was able to field the bouncing ball but collided with second baseman Matt Weaver erasing what little chance he had to make a play at first. Spruill wound up allowing three hits by the end of his night.
The Hillcats put an exclamation point on their first victory in 11 games scoring seven runs in the final two innings.
Adam Milligan hit his third home run of the season to lead things off in the eighth. Three batters later, Shawn McGill, in his first game as a Hillcat, left the yard for a two-run shot increasing the Lynchburg lead to 5-0.
A solo home run off Hillcats' reliever Jason Lowey put Frederick on the board in the bottom of the eighth before the Hillcats continued to pound the ball in the ninth.
Ware led of the Hillcats ninth with a triple and scored on Simmons' single three pitches later. Then, with one out and runners at first and second, Joey Terdoslavich blasted his Carolina League leading sixth home run of the year. The three-run homer put the Hillcats up 9-1.
Lowey pitched a scoreless ninth sealing the emphatic victory for the Hillcats.
Ryan O'Shea (1-1) took the loss for the Keys.
By winning Thursday night, Lynchburg avoids matching the all-time worst losing streak in Hillcats history set at 11 games twice, once in 2007 and again in 2008.
The Hillcats and Keys will continue their four-game series Friday night at 7:00 PM. Left-handed pitcher Chris Masters will make his first start of the season for the Hillcats against righty Mitch Atkins for Frederick.
