Frederick Keys News Release
The Lynchburg Hillcats dominated the Keys on Thursday as they put an end to their 10-game losing streak. RHP Zeke Spruill tossed seven shutout innings in his third start of the season while the Hillcats added three late homers en route to an easy 9-1 win over Frederick. C Brian Ward belted a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth as he proved to be the lone run the Keys scored on Thursday night. Frederick fell to 5-7 following the loss while Lynchburg improved to 2-10.
Neither team scored in the first two innings as it seemed like Spruill and RHP Ryan O'Shea were in the midst of a pitcher's duel at Harry Grove Stadium. The Hillcats scored the game's first run in the top of the third. With two outs, CF L.V. Ware singled to leftfield. Following a steal of second base by Ware, SS Andrelton Simmons hit a groundball to the right side of the infield. 2B LJ Hoes slid to his left but the balled kicked away from Hoes as Ware scored from second. Lynchburg led 1-0 after three.
Spruill was lights out on Thursday night. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, 3B Dale Mollenhauer reached on the infield single to breakup the no-hit bid by Spruill. The Marietta, Georgia native threw seven shutout innings en route to his first win of the year. Spruill struck out eight, walked one, and allowed just three hits on the night.
The Hillcats added another run off O'Shea in the fifth when CF Todd Cunningham tripled to right field. O'Shea exited the contest after six innings. He allowed two runs on nine hits while striking three and walking one.
Lynchburg tacked onto their lead in the eighth and ninth inning. RF Adam Milligan and C Shawn McGill homered in the eighth while 1B Joseph Terdoslavich hit a three-run shot in the ninth. Terdoslavich currently leads the Carolina League with six home runs.
Spruill improved his record to 1-1 on the year while O'Shea fell to 1-1.
The Keys and Hillcats will play game two of the four-game series on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. RHP Mitch Atkins (0-0, 3.00) will start for Frederick while LHP Chris Masters (0-0, 1.23) gets the nod for Lynchburg.
First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium with fireworks set to follow the contest. For tickets, call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
