Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (62-36 17-11) vs. Frederick Keys (45-56, 11-19)
Monday, July 21 -- 7:05 PM
BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, SC
Game #99, Home Game #45
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans look to rebound from a series opening loss in game two against the Frederick Keys. The Pelicans have taken 11-of-17 meetings from the Keys this season. The Keys have been more competitive at BB&T Coastal Field where they hold a 3-4 mark as opposed to a 3-7 mark at Harry Grove Stadium.
Last night, Miguel Abreu vaulted the Keys in front in the second inning by crushing a grand slam off the video board in left-center field. The pelicans inched within two but Keys pitching was too much for the Birds to handle. The Pelicans only managed two hits all night against the combination of Brandon Erbe and J.P. Martinez.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: In a lefty vs. righty matchup, Scott Diamond goes in search of his ninth win, while Pedro Beato looks for his fifth win of the season.
Diamond: Through 10 starts for the Pelicans, Diamond has been nothing short of sensational. In 60.1 total innings, he has allowed just 21 earned runs. His spot on command has been his key to success as evident by his 51:15 strikeout to walk ratio. Diamond has allowed at least three runs in each of his last five starts. In his last start, he picked up the win in five innings against the Keys. Diamond is much more effective against lefties (.193) than right-handed hitters (.287). Pelicans offense has backed Diamond each and every time he starts. He is receiving 8.4 runs per start.
Currently in his first professional season, Diamond was signed as a non-drafted free agent in August of 2007 after he dazzled for the Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League (Summer Collegiate). Played his collegiate ball for three years at SUNY Binghamton.
Beato: In 11 starts, Beato has been consistent. In 55.2 innings, he has allowed 60 hits and 27 earned runs. In his last start (7/16 vs. LYN), he went seven innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs to pick up the win. He displayed tremendous command as he struck out five and did not walk a single batter. Making his third start against the Pelicans this season. In his first (4/12), he went six innings and allowed just three hits and one run to earn the win. In his second (6/30), the Pelicans recorded nine hits and four runs in six innings against Beato to tag him with the loss. Beato does not pitch well with runners on base. The opposition is hitting .299 against him with runners on base.
A first round draft choice of the Orioles in 2006 (32), Beato is one of four first round draft choices on the Keys roster. Originally from the Dominican Republic, the 21-year old attended high school in Brooklyn, NY (Xavieran HS). He went on to St. Petersburg College where he was drafted by the Mets in the 17th of the 2005 draft. He returned to school and rose to the first round in 2006.
JONES CONTINUES ON-BASE STREAK: Pelicans second baseman Travis Jones will put his season-long 24-game on-base streak on the line tonight. Jones' streak is the longest active streak in the Carolina League. The longest streak of its kind in '08 is 32-games (Drennen- KIN).
FLOWERS STANDS ALONE: Pelicans' C Tyler Flowers was walked last night by Frederick's Brandon Erbe, allowing Flowers to set the Pelicans' franchise record for single-season walks. Flowers has been issued 72 free passes this season, which surpasses Matt Young's record total of 71 from 2006.
SOUPS ON PART TWO: Eric Campbell is approaching the Pelicans' franchise record for career RBIs. Campbell has driven in 46 in just 48 games in 2008, and coupled with his 49 in 2007 he has 95 for his career with Myrtle Beach. That total is just five shy of Adam LaRoche, who posted 100 between 2001-2002. LaRoche was recently named to the Pelicans' 10th Anniversary Team.
